While we normally turn our skills to furniture, we’re always happy to take on new challenges and one recent commission let us indulge in a spot of box-making.
A watch collector in Northamptonshire had a
special birthday coming up, so we were contacted by his wife to create a
special case to store his collection in.
We selected a few nice
pieces of walnut, utilising a lighter sap wood and offsetting it against
darker stripes which created a simple yet stunning design. The hand cut
joints on each corner show off the craftsmanship involved and the
method of joining the base casts a shadow under the box giving it the
illusion of floating. To display his watches we turned a length of ash
for them to slide onto.
We fitted the box with polished chrome
hinges and clasp to compliment the dark timber and then inlayed a small
handle made from 3,000 year old bog oak. See more here
